A closer look at singles and slabs
Understand the details that distinguish one card listing from another.
Match the exact card
Start with the expansion, card number, language and finish. The same Pokémon can appear on many different cards. Alternate artwork and parallel foil finishes should be identified separately.
Read the condition description
Look at the front and back, corners, edges and surface. Condition labels are a summary; photos and descriptions of individual marks give you more useful information. Ask for clarification if a detail is unclear.
Know what a slab contains
A graded card is enclosed in a holder with a label from a grading company. Match the label details to the listing and use that company’s official certification lookup where available. A certification lookup is one check, not a substitute for examining the item.
Different cards need different listings
Two copies with different wear, language, finish or grading details are not automatically interchangeable. Look for actual-item photos when buying a unique single or slab.
Collect for your own reasons
A grade or a rare-looking card is not a promise of future value. Choose the artwork, Pokémon, deck or collection that interests you, within a budget you are comfortable with.
